My name is Carbrie (pronounced CAR bryeh) and this be the telling of my tale and is long in the telling. But as I have come to understand the younger race of humans have but a short life so I will try and keep my tale short.
I am centuries old for I am Fae and could at one time be known to be one of the Seelie Court but because of my actions and poor decisions from along ago time I am seen as a pariah to the Court. This is why I find myself in the current state I am in, no longer do I live within the body I was born to; but have been locked in this prison of a body that I now inhabit; one of a small insignificant form of a gecko. No longer am I able to fly free and no longer did I have abilities that were once my own nor the things I took for granted. But I was made a servant to the artifacts of power that the Seelie Court created for a human that was worthy; also I was made to be a familiar to the human that would obtain them. This was my punishment and my penance.
Like most Fae I enjoyed the wonders of the woodlands but for me the water had a draw to me when I was young and my affinity to the rivers and lakes and ponds held sway in my heart. I had fun with other Fae of my ilk it was a joyous time.
Yet as the time of the Human race came to be, fewer of us gathered and then even less and only at certain times of the day or seasons as man became prolific in there building of towns and cities. But I loved my water ways and lakes nae too much to leave. I found myself a lake with a small island settled in the middle of the lake where a river ran through it with a tall waterfall at one point and an outlet flowing into a river. Now when I say a small island in a truth one could settle a small village there but it would not due for any expansions as the humans like to do. But it did not stop them from build one along the shore of my lake.
I had no hatred or animosity towards the humans; for all creatures need a place to live and call home. And for a time they were fun to watch and to play with, the tricks I would play were simple and fun. I would hide myself from their view and go in and move things around only to watch them walk around in confusion trying to understand how an item got from one place to another. Leaving gates open to allow their livestock to wander. And for a time I would disguise myself to their sight and walk among them, learning of their ways and how to speak their language.
One day while I lazed upon my island a boat with a young couple came to the shores of my isle, I think they came to sneak away from the adults and to play in the way the young like to do. I watched as the talked and had a meal and enjoyed the body of the other. At that moment I had the most irresistible urge to join them. But that would mean reveling myself to them and I thought better of that. So instead I thought to watch over this beautiful couple and see what life would bring. They came often and would go to the village at times to seek them out secretly or disguise, I always would need to keep my distance which could be tricky at times but I had to unless my disguise be revealed as a merely an illusion.
Upon one of their visits I decided to reveal myself in a way. I created a water being form from out of the waters lake one that looked similar to myself but without wings and no legs. I presented myself to them. At first they were fearful but I convinced them that I was a simple water spirit that enjoyed their visits. For a while they no longer visited, It took time but eventually they returned and I too returned using the water from. Since the form could not actually talk I only made myself invisible to them and stood by them and talked moving what was the water forms mouth. I am sure they thought it strange as they had jumped when I talked, for they expected the sound of voice to be coming from where “I” (the water being) was and not from right beside them. I convinced them it was how I communicated.
I convinced them should the wish to “play” in the waters by my shore I would make sure that they were always safe as long as I was around. I only asked if I could but join them as they played. By their expression I could tell they wondered as to my meaning. I had them step into the water and allowed the water to flow around them to caress them and swirl around them. And they truly enjoyed the effect of the warm water moving over them, so they had agreed. Once they had become accustomed to this I then while being invisible joined them in the water and caressed each of them enjoying the intimacy of their play and they could not distinguish my physical touch to that of the water.
As the years past they still came and we would also just talk, sometimes each would come alone. It was during this time that I grew fonder of the young lass her name was Kallie. We grew to be friends and I no longer wanted to hide my true identity from her as she had shared so much of herself with me and what she wanted in her life. She also befriended me in my disguised form the one she knew as Brie, which only made me care for her more. The male I will not give his name as it does not deserve the respect to be spoken nor to be remembered.
The day I planned to revel myself to Kallie I was in the village in my disguised form. While talking we spoke at the same time saying “I have a secret I want to be sharing with ya”. We just looked at one another not sure what to think and only just smiled and laughed. We continued to walk to the docks; which was fine to my thinking, as I liked to be by the waters. She climbed into a small row boat and beckoned me to join her. I asked simply “For what purpose?” She explained that she had a friend that lived out on the island, someone that seemed to be as soulmate to me. And could think of no other person she knew that should also get to know her “friend” on the island.
So we each took an oar and started paddling our way out. I could have of course just rowed us out there by myself for my lithe body shape t hid my true potential. But I did use my water ability to move us along easier and a bit faster pace as I was anxious to reveal myself to Kallie. We had some small talk and then she proceeded to tell me about her “friend” as she did so she stumbled and looked at me. And asked why I didn’t seem so surprised at her revelation. That is when I told her that her "secret friend" and I were one in the same. Kallie looked at me dumbfounded as I let the illusion fall. There I stood before her in my true form, a Fae folk wings and all. See gasped and I thought for sure she was going to jump into the lake to get away. But instead she threw her arms around my neck and cried. And I lowered us to sit the boat once again, I let her be for a moment to calm herself then asked if she was well.
She looked at me with tears in her eyes and a smile on her face and said to me “Everything was amazing and that her best friend and secret friend were one in the same, a beautiful being in whom she loved and adored”. We continued to embrace and I moved the boat to my isle, where we spent the day and night together. When we got up we broke our fast and gathered ourselves and spent more time together just talking. It was about midday when we walked to the beach of my isle and there as we approached the shore, holding hands, we came upon the man to whom Kallie was betrothed the same man that had spent time talking with me and sharing his life. My thought was finally we can all be together and truly share our lives with one another.
But as he landed and looked upon us walking together holding hands he asked Kallie, “Who this creature?” With a smile on her face and joy in her words she proceeded to tell him who I was. The confusion in his face turned to animosity and to hatred as Kallie explained that I was Brie and their “secret” friend of the waters. He had quickly grabbed her arm and pulled Kallie to himself. And she let out a squeal saying to stop that he was hurting her. He started shouting things calling me an abomination and evil and deceiver. And started spewing untruths, like that I was only trying to get into their lives to steal their children (should they ever have any). I stood there hurt not knowing what to think or do at the moment. It looked as if Kallie was heartbroken, I could have easily plucked her from his grasp but she also did not fight with him. But only cried and asked “why” as he told her to get in the boat and that they were never to return to this island.
I waited a few days to pass to see if they or at least Kallie would return hoping that the heat of the moment had passed. But neither had come. So I decided I would go to shore and see what had become of my friend Kallie. I went in disguise but I soon found out that Kallie’s betrothed had told the village about who my identity of who Brie was or at least in some fashion. As the mob started to throw rocks at me and gathered around me, telling me to take my evil elsewhere.
So I ran away not wanting to give them any more ideas about what I could do. But I returned that evening hidden from view and looked for Kallie silently. Since I had been around from when the village was built I probably knew most of what they thought was secrets. I searched and searched and finally found Kallie she was bound up in what would be called a storage cellar of what was to be their home once they had gotten married in the new solstice season. I was infuriated that she would be dealt with in such a way. Luckily for me the idiot of a man she had deemed to love was asleep in his comfortable bed. I quickly created the illusion that all looked the same as he left the area of the cellar and it was then I went down to see Kallie. She started to cry as I entered and I removed the gag from her mouth and she just started saying “I’m sorry, I’m sorry” over and over again. Once I got her to settle down some I asked “So you wish to leave?” She nodded and I told her "I must hear your words not just your acknowledgement". She then said “May I come and be with you”, I smiled and respond “Of course me dear Kallie”. I then unbound her bonds and we came out of the cellar only to see him standing there looking puzzled but as Kallie gasped the illusion broke as he seem to understand at that point what was odd. His confusion turned to rage as he went to lunge at us. But as Kallie let out a scream he halted in his movement. I looked at him and simple stated "we are leaving and you shall not follow or harm Kallie again". I raised my hand to strike him. But Kallie pulled on my arm begging “please don’t harm him, let us just leave this place”. So for her sake I held back my fury.
As we escaped Kallie leading us to the docks to board a boat across the lake (looking back I regret that moment because I could have flown us across saving us precious time). As we reached the dock I could see a mob gathering further back my guess would be that they would give chase after us. For it seems Kallie’s earlier scream had brought the notice of neighbours. I told Kallie not to worry I would take care of them and she again implored for me to not hurt them. So once again I sighed and told her "anything for you my love"; she smiled in return and said she would find us a boat. I then turned my attention to the approaching mob and created the illusions of wolves and bears coming from the woods to distract them and it did, for their attention turned to the threat they thought was now upon them. Firing arrows and rocks at my illusions; I was concentrating on the illusions to move them about out of the way of attacks, because if an arrow did strike and go throw them villagers might catch on too quick and I might then have to handle this differently. It was because of this distraction that I did not see that one of the men had decided to fire an arrow at me. Kallie not knowing that I could survive such an attack. Screamed and launched her body at me knocking me out of the way, only to be struck by the arrow meant for me. I quickly got up to rush to her side as she lay on the dock only to see that the arrow had pierced her heart and she lie there dying. I took her into my arms and as she looked into my eyes she said “I am not sorry I made my choice”. She could see both the sadness and fury in my eyes. And once again she implored me to forgive them. And then she died in my arms. I looked to the villagers which were now lead by Kallie’s betrothed. I carefully and lovingly laid Kallie down and stood crying out “Kallie is dead because of you; leave me in peace.” And I flew off to my island to mourn.
As the new day dawned it was oddly quiet and a fog was over the lake, maybe it felt my sorrow and stillness in my heart for Kallie’s death. Yet over the water I could hear a noise through the quiet of the lakes waters a noise I recognized as oars paddling through water. I rose into the air hovering over the ground not taller than I. As I looked out over the lake from the shores of my isle, slowly they came into view; what looked to be all the boats from the village all teaming with men and some women from the village. And of course that cur of a man was leading the way and he saw me and no words were spoken but “Attack!!!” I called up a watery wall that stopped the arrows from coming anywhere near me. As I let the watery wall lower, he spoke. “You, you killed Kallie, if you had not beguiled her she would be with me now.” This made me furious for he didn’t seem to mind that just awhile back the play we enjoyed and the talks were a good thing, it was only when he realized how real I was that he seemed to have a difference of opinion. And he knew that Kallie truly loved me and not just the notion of what I was. I once again held back my fury but in a smoldering tone responded ”leave now and this matter will be closed, for Kallie’s dying breath she asked that I was forgive you all and bring to you no harm” with a heavy sigh I continued, “I will honour her wishes; so be gone and bother me no more and I you”. With a sneer he answered “aye we will leave and you will be gone”, it was at that moment I heard the rush of feet and turned to see a group of men with a net and swords moving towards me with grime intent in their eyes. He had only been trying to distract me so these men could sneak upon me and catch and slay me.
Without much more than a tilt of my head the men froze in their tracks and the look on their faces quickly turned to one of dread as they realized they could no longer move their bodies. I turned in fury and looked out at the fleet of villagers in their boats and screamed! “I show you mercy and try to forgive and you sent men to kill me from behind as we talk” I proceeded to yell at them about their worthlessness. And while doing so I had the men that attacked me from behind march forward like puppets. I marched them into the lake. Even as the men walked themselves to a watery death. The Cur shouted out again “See she is as evil as I said, she claims she will not harm us, but she just sent our friends our neighbors, our loved ones to a horrible death, Attack!!!” You would think they would have learned but the bile that this man brought forth and the hatred these villagers embraced in following this man had turned these once peaceful villagers into a frothing mob.
I no longer would hold back my fury, I was going to end this once and for all and bring peace to my life. Or so I thought. With all the might I could summon from the waters I stopped their useless attack and countered with my own. I brought down upon the fleet tidal waves, one tidal wave after another; all the way to the shores of the village crashing their ships and boats into the village over turning them as the fell into the waters to drown and to be sure of their destruction I had the waters crash and smash every building in the village. When my fury had abated so did the waters and truly all that was left was destruction. I flew over to the shore to see what I had wrought and there among the rubble lay bodies even some within the trees. No man, women or child survived. All were dead or if any survived they were nowhere to be seen.
It wasn’t until years later when a fellow Fae visited did the discovery of what I had done came to light to the Seelie Court and I was punished. Not so much for bringing forth my wrath nor for protecting myself; but that I had done so on such a massive scale and without any discretion and most of all I had killed innocents, the children. This is why I was punished, I was transformed into the form of something powerless, a simple gecko; but was made to be useful. I was made guardian over the bracers and amulet of power that would be granted to worthy humans and I was to help them as familiar and guide in in the use of these items of power, I was granted powers but only those that would make be a help, a protector to the wearers of the items. I no longer was able to or allowed access to any ability that was capable of outright hurt to another.
I have done this now for centuries as penance, to live out the rest of my life as such.
But the new Master of the artifacts of power Nick Raithe aka Astrafor has offered me a chance to live a life in my original form even though he knows of my past he wants to offer me a semblance of the life I once had. And although I have freedom to do as I please in the form I am currently in; I cannot say that the desire to be able to walk and fly, to do things I once took for granted is a tempting offer even if it comes at a cost of my freedom. For in this form I would truly be a servant to this man, this man that I have come to trust and love. I’ve helped him become more then what he once was able to do and he has always seemed to trust in my thoughts and opinion. Most of the Masters of the items thought of me as a pet, few even befriended me but none like he. So if the freedom I sacrifice is to serve this man I am willing to serve him not just out of obedience but out of love. I look forward to sharing my time with him and his friends and team. I will finally be able to interact with the world in a way I once use to. This will be interesting to be as two but one in the same. As familiar I will be Brie and as servant I will be Cara. I must say that I am excited. I wonder what the Seelie Court would think should they find out or care to find out. Since from the beginning of my penance I have not once been visited by any of those of the Seelie Court.
I am centuries old for I am Fae and could at one time be known to be one of the Seelie Court but because of my actions and poor decisions from along ago time I am seen as a pariah to the Court.
