Carol was your typical nurse's aid in the local hospital, who worked the graveyard shift. One night, the local EMT's brought in a burn patient. Using new technology, the doctors were going to try some experimental radiation procedures that is supposed to protect the undamaged cells and stimulate the burned cells to reform into healthy cells. The patient was taken to a specially shielded room for the procedure. Carol was inside the room making sure everything was set up. The doctors, not realizing Carol was still in the room, had activated the device. Getting bombarded by the experimental radiation, Carol collapsed. After a few minutes, the doctors had turned off the machine and started the decontamination process - which would clear out any lingering radiation - before they could go in and check the results. This process took about 2 hours.
Upon entering the room, the doctors were horrified to see Carol's body on the floor. Surprised that she still had a pulse, they took her immediately to ICU. Unsure of what to do for this, they simply put IV's in her to keep her fluids up and "fed". After about 2 weeks of being unconscious, Carol finally woke up. Still groggy from the ordeal, she was functional enough to recognize the attending doctor. He had taken her hand and told her that she was stable. After a few moments of holding her hand, the doctor became weak and fainted, falling to the floor. Carol pressed the call button and other doctors and nurses came in. Carol told them that he had just fainted. Another doctor checked him, and his vitals were weak. While he was being taken to another ICU room, Carol was asked what happened. She told them and they seemed puzzled. After the doctors discussed it, they believed that the machine had somehow altered Carol.
Once she was well enough to get up and about, she had started rehab to see what else may have changed with her. They found out that her strength was increased as well as her touch being what caused the other doctor to faint. It seems that her touch drains the health from whoever she touched (they did not realize, nor find out, that it also heals her to a degree). Carol now wears gloves when around others, so she doesn't inadvertantly drain them.
The hospital gave Carol 2 weeks off, with pay, so she could get herself back to normal - or whatever could pass as normal for her now. During this time, she found out that she could use the electrons in the air to allow herself to fly as well as to manipulate electricity. She had also found out that she could increase her density - a power she found out by accident when an object was coming at her and she put her arms up as if to block it. She had also realized that she had to buy new clothes, as her now 6' 6" height could no longer accomodate her old clothes, which were for her previous 5' 9" height. Needless to say, she felt quite embarassed going into clothing stores in a bikini - the only things left that would fit her.
Carol has resumed her post at the hospital, but she is required to wear gloves (actual gloves, not just the thin latex ones hospitals use) and is under orders to avoid physical contact with anyone whenever possible. Other nurses and nurses' aids have been charged with things that require touch, such as getting blood samples and setting up IV's. Carol's duties is more directed towards getting vital readings (from the machines output) and other tasks that don't involve physical contact. Life is no longer normal for Carol, as those on the hospital staff know of her dangerous touch and many give her a wide berth, as if she's contaminated. This would probably bother her if it weren't for her good self-esteem. She does wonder, however, of how she could use her new abilities to help the city.
Because her strength seems to be the thing that was most affected, she has decided to use the name of Titannika, to refer to a female Titan. She had heard of Titania, a female Titan of immense strength and thus altered her name to refer to a lesser female Titan.
